Ethnicity and Folklore Culture Macas

Shuar.  This is an ancestral ethnicity known around the world for its head shrinking, warriors, and great game hunters.  Achuar.  An ethnic group similar to the Shuar that presently like on the length of the Cutucu Range.  This group has been able to maintain and preserve the better part of their cultural manifestations such as haircuts and their serious character. Macabea.  They are a culture from mixed heritage, which has and still lives in Macas.

 

Sangay National Park Nature Macas

It is found in the center orient region of Ecuador.  You can find here the active volcano of Sangay which is a main attraction; you can also find the Tungurahua and El Altar volcanoes.  The park offers ample ecosystems that hold tropical forests, meadows and perpetual snows on the tops of the volcanoes.  Its location allows for the development and growth of a variety of flora and fauna.

 


Cave of the Tayos Nature Macas

Cave of the Tayos.  The caves are enormous and are believed to have the dimensions of some 4,000 sq meters.  Its height is normal so you can walk on foot.  It is believed that tribes lived here from 1000 b.c., now only the Tayos do.  To make your way into the cave you must throw a rope down into the depths of its only entrance.

Ruins of Sangay Archeology Macas

 

Constructed between 3,000 and 3,500 B.C.E., it is a complex of 1,200 pyramids, fountains, and interior roads, constitute the vestiges of the most ancient culture in Ecuador.  The ruins are 30 Km from Macas.

Huapul Archeological Complex Archeology Macas

Locataed 3 Km from the Shuar community of Santa Maria de Tunans, to the northeast of Macas.  It was made by the Upano culture (1,700 A.C.), on the left margin of the Upano river.  It holds more than 300 earth mounds in forms of rectangles and ovals.

 

Rafting, Kayaking, Cicling Adventure Macas

The most common adventure sports in the Sangay National Park are hiking, mountain climbing, and excursions.
Rafting and kayaking.  This can be done in the waters of the Upano Ricer which is considered as one of the best in Ecuador.  Small boating.  In the small rivers such as the Yuquipa, Abanico, Jurumbaino which are close to the city of Macas.

Cycling.  This can be done on the roads that link Macas with the surrounding communities.  It is ideal in order to enjoy the landscapes, customs, and lifestyles of the rural population.

 

Sangay National Park Avi-Fauna Macas

Sangay National Park.  The most distinguished animals of the Sangay National Park are the spectacled bear, the jaguar, the mountain lion, the Andean Condor, the roaster of the sierra, the spider monkey, howling monkeys, the wolly monkey, Andean gulls, the curiquingue, the pudu mefistofeles (a small type of deer), the tapir of the Andes, the Andean rooster, crocodiles, piranhas,  and more.  There is also a great variety of insects.

 

Sangay Volcano Volcanoes Macas

The Sangay Volcano.  It is famous for being one of the most active volcanoes in the worldIt is found in a unique spot alongside two other volcanoes, the Tungurahua and the Altar and is surrounded by extensive forest.  At the summit there are three large craters that erupt intermediately.
